Rapid Deco® Level 5 Joint Compound is an all-purpose, professional-grade joint compound, specifically formulated to give optimum results when used with Rapid Deco Level 5 drywall. Used together, they work as an innovative system for flawless finishes in less time.

It also can be used as a traditional skim-coat material for non-coated gypsum board, and provides an equivalent substitution to a field-applied Level 5 finish (per ASTM C840).

Taping and Finishing Joints:
Step 1: Using a taping knife (4–6 in.), generously apply joint compound to the surface you want to -finish (tapered edge). Then press joint tape firmly into the compound, removing any excess material behind the
tape and creating a good bond with the gypsum board. Allow compound to dry thoroughly.
Step 2: Using a finishing knife, trowel or mechanical tool (8-10 in.), apply a fill coat of joint compound over embedded tape. Remove excess material by feathering the center and the edges of the joint. Allow compound to dry thoroughly.
Step 3: Using a finishing knife, trowel or mechanical tool (10–12 in.), apply a thin coat of joint compound over at a width adequate to fill any voids or shallow spots. Remove excess material by feathering the center and the edges of the joint. Allow compound to dry completely before sanding or painting.
Note: Not recommended for use with mesh tape. For finishing with mesh tape, use Rapid Joint® setting-type compounds as a tape-setting material, following with finish coats of Rapid Deco Level 5 Joint Compound.
Finishing Inside Corners:
Using a steel finishing knife (4”– 6”), generously apply Rapid Deco joint compound to both sides of the inside corner. Fold joint tape along center crease and press firmly into center of the inside corner. Remove any excess material behind the tape and create a good bond with the gypsum board. Allow compound to dry thoroughly. Apply second coat to one side, allow to dry and apply to opposite side. Allow compound to dry thoroughly before sanding or painting.
Fastener Heads and Trim:
Rapid Deco Level 5 joint compound can be applied to fill corner beads and nail/screw dimples. A second coat may be applied, if necessary, when dry.
Rapid Deco Level 5 joint compound washes off easily with warm water. Tools should be dried thoroughly to prevent rusting.
Sanding is not required between applications unless the work is rough. Sand lightly after Step 3 application is completely dry. If dry-sanding, use minimum 150-grit sandpaper. Avoid over-sanding, which can scuff gypsum board paper.
Rapid Deco Level 5 joint compound can be used to skim coat regular uncoated gypsum board as a replacement for standard joint compound or other specifically manufactured skim-coat materials. A skim coat leaves a thin film of joint compound over the entire gypsum board surface, fills imperfections and eliminates texture differences between the gypsum board and the joint compound. Skim coating is recommended for rooms with critical lighting conditions, or where gloss or semi-gloss paints are used.
Painting and Wallpapering:
Painting should not proceed until joint compound is thoroughly dry (See GA-236). For best results, a good quality gypsum board primer should be applied, in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions, before painting or wallpapering.
Rapid Deco Level 5 joint compound can also be used to texture walls and ceilings. For best results, apply a high-quality gypsum board primer before texturing, making sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Joint compound can be applied (up to 1/4 in. thick) with a roller, sponge, brush or trowel to create the desired effect. Paint over when dry.
