Project: Bonnet Creek Hotel & Convention Center
Location: Orlando, Florida
Bonnet Creek — a 492-acre parcel of land in Orange County, Florida — couldn’t be any closer to Walt Disney World®. Because of its proximity to the most popular travel destination in the world, Hilton Hotels Corporation partnered with Bonnet Creek, Ltd. to develop a three-building complex. The buildings include Hilton Bonnet Creek, the Hilton Convention Center and the Waldorf Astoria®.
Bonnet Creek hired KUD International, LLC, to manage the design and development of the $500 million project. The installation of the “exterior skin” (framing, sheathing, water barrier, lath and stucco) was subcontracted to Burkett Stucco for the 17-story Hilton, 15-story Astoria and 2-story Convention Center. Although not originally specified on the project, CertainTeed’s GlasRoc Exterior Sheathing became the approved product of choice after CertainTeed Gypsum’s Territory Manager Doug Looney sent a detailed product submittal to the architect. GlasRoc’s 5/8” fire-resistance rated panels conformed to Bonnet Creek’s design specs and met all code requirements.
Burkett Stucco Executive Vice President Don Genovese described GlasRoc’s main advantages as “the ability to apply silicone over the joints and achieve a rapid drying time. GlasRoc seemed to hold up better in wet conditions and resulted in far less waste.” Silicone not only dries faster on GlasRoc, it adheres better, too, thanks to its fully embedded fiberglass mats.
Installers on the project praised the board’s easy handling, due to the embedded fiberglass. “The easier it is to handle, the less time it takes to stock and install,” said Bonnet Creek project manager Servi Sosa.
