CertainTeed Corporation Achieves ENERGY STAR® Challenge for Industry Recognition at Georgia Plant
(Valley Forge, Pa.) – CertainTeed Corporation has reached another major milestone in its sustainability efforts, achieving the ENERGY STAR® Challenge for Industry at its Social Circle, Ga., Restoration Millwork®
cellular PVC trim plant.
Developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry is a national call-to-action to improve the energy efficiency of America’s commercial and industrial buildings. It recognizes industrial sites that improve energy efficiency by 10 percent within five years. The Social Circle plant significantly surpassed the minimum requirements of the award, by reducing energy intensity by more than 22 percent within only two years.
“I am exceptionally proud of our team’s effort. This honor reflects our great inroads with improving energy efficiencies,” said John Barone, plant manager of the Social Circle manufacturing facility. “Achieving EPA recognition also highlights our company-wide commitment to sustainability practices and environmental protection.”
The Social Circle plant tracked energy intensity between 2009 and 2011 by implementing processes to de-energize all non-essential equipment when not in use and completing audits to verify compliance. Measurements validated cost savings with real time monitoring devices to measure utilities usage. In addition, plant employees completed a group waste reduction usage spreadsheet that measured quarterly water, gas, and electrical consumption. Usage trends were then compared to ensure sustainability and continual improvement.
“Although we’ve well exceeded EPA goals, we also understand that there is more opportunity out there for us to improve and plan on taking the challenge again,” added Barone.
Sustainability practices are a way of life at the plant, with Social Circle’s 35 employees actively seeking ways to reduce the site’s environmental footprint. The plant earned the globally recognized ISO 14001 certification for developing a formalized environmental management system that underwent rigorous, third party evaluation. Staff have also implemented a comprehensive recycling program that includes bottles, cans, paper, plastic strapping, plastic bags and cardboard. In addition, a zero discharge team monitors anything that cannot be recycled, minimizing landfill waste.
“At CertainTeed, these types of initiatives are an important part of our culture and core values, which include a strong emphasis on respect for the environment,” said Rick Brinton, general manager of exterior trim, fence, rail and deck for the CertainTeed Siding Products Group. “We are proud of all the work at the Social Circle plant that made this possible.”
The Social Circle plant manufactures the Restoration Millwork full line of trim, beadboard and accessories that is engineered to look, feel and work like top-grade lumber. Unlike wood, however, it is made with a long-lasting, low-maintenance material that is resistant to UV rays, rotting, warping, moisture and insects. Offered in Natural White finish, Restoration Millwork can also be painted to complement exterior colors and cut using ordinary woodworking tools. In addition, it is GreenCircle®
certified, features a Class A (Class 1) flame spread classification and 25-year limited warranty.
