National Drinking Water Week is May 6-12

With much of the drinking water infrastructure in the U.S. constructed during the late 1800s, the 1920s and the boom years following World War II, a significant number of the nation’s water mains will need to be replaced or repaired in the next 25 years. National Drinking Water Week, observed May 6-12, is coordinated by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) to raise awareness of the importance of investing in water infrastructure and the vital role water plays in our daily lives.

As a leading manufacturer of pipe products that help municipalities safely and efficiently deliver drinking water, CertainTeed Pipe is dedicated to ensuring a strong national water infrastructure that can stand the test of time. Here are several things you can do to ensure a steady supply of clean drinking water in your community for generations to come.

Don’t flush your meds. Flushing unwanted or expired medications down the toilet or sink can contaminate drinking water sources. Instead, call your city or county government’s household trash and recycling service and ask if a drug take-back program is available in your community.

Maintain your well. If you get your drinking water from a well, scheduling an annual water well check-up can be just as important as checking your smoke detector batteries and furnace each season. Also, be sure to keep hazardous chemicals far away from your well and maintain a "clean" zone of at least 50 feet between your well and any kennels and livestock operations.

Go easy with lawn chemicals. Don’t overuse pesticides or fertilizers as they can travel through runoff and soil and contaminate ground water.

Get to know your utility. The best way to find out more information about your drinking water is to contact your local utility. Water utilities monitor for more than 100 contaminants on a regular basis, and 82 percent of large water utilities have their own water laboratories on site, according to a survey conducted by AWWA. The more you know about your water utility, such as where its water is sourced and how it is treated, the better position you will be in to contribute positively to the quality of your drinking water.

Be heard. According to a recent AWWA study, the cost of repairing and expanding U.S. drinking water infrastructure will top $1 trillion in the next 25 years. That figure will rise to $1.7 trillion by 2050. However, proactively investing in necessary updates will pay off for generations to come. Write a letter to your congressmen or get involved with local government to support proper funding for needed infrastructure projects.
