Carbon Emissions Reduction at CertainTeed Applauded By National Environmental Award Program

(Tampa, Fl.) – Through its steadfast commitment to sustainability, CertainTeed is taking steps to manufacture and transport its green building products with the environment top of mind. As a result, the company has reduced its carbon footprint at four of its gypsum plants by more than 2,800 tons and is being recognized as a 2010 CSX Environmental Award winner.

“CertainTeed gypsum board products have strong green attributes, and we fully embrace sustainability at our manufacturing facilities,” says John Donaldson, president of CertainTeed Gypsum. “Reducing the carbon footprint of our supply chain is a logical extension of our overarching commitment to the environment.”

To reduce its environmental impact, CertainTeed is integrating strategies outlined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay™ Transport Partnership, which includes partnering with transportation providers on idling reductions, improved payloads, and the use of advanced power train technologies. In working with CSX, a SmartWay Partner, CertainTeed has implemented an environmentally responsible strategy for rail trans-portation, which has reduced carbon emissions for shipments out of its manufacturing facilities in Moundsville, W.Va., Carrollton, Kent., Cody, Wyo., and Nashville, Ark. This reduction is the equivalent of planting more than 60,000 trees or removing more than 480 passenger vehicles from the road.

“The CSX Environmental Award is excellent recognition of our progress in reducing our carbon footprint,” adds Donaldson. “As we move forward, we will continue to take steps that strengthen the sustainability of our operations and supply chain.”
