In order to keep with the times and better meet the needs of its members, historic, nationally renowned Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Mass., recently updated its facilities with a new $1-million pool and recreation complex. Featuring amenities such as four pools, a large water slide, a tennis court, a basketball court and a patio for social gatherings, the new complex provides more diverse recreational options for member families and adds to the visual appeal of the country club. One of the key aesthetical features of the addition is a beautiful stepped vinyl perimeter fence installation done by veteran Worcester contractor Miller Fence.
During the design phase of the project, the country club saw the need for a new fence that would not only expand the original pool area, but also define it visually and help repurpose the lawn so the country club could host more events.
Worcester Country Club hired Miller Fence for the project and consulted the contractor for guidance in selecting the best product for the job. The contractor suggested CertainTeed’s Bufftech® Imperial Semi-Private PVC Fence with Select Cedar texture.
“We went before the committee with Bufftech Imperial samples and showed them why the product would be a good choice in terms of quality and aesthetics,” said Joe Miller, owner of Miller Fence. “We’ve been a Bufftech dealer for over 28 years, and the first Bufftech fences that we installed still look good today.”
The original plan was to use a more traditional racking installation, having the entire fence follow the slope of the golf course’s hills diagonally, but the slope was too steep. To create a better look for the sloping hills, the contractor acquired the country club’s approval to install the fence in a more unique stepping configuration, creating a terraced appearance.
“We had some steep slopes to go up, some of them with a 20-foot grade,” said Miller. “To make the installation work, we had to cut the fence panels in half and make them 4 feet long by 6 feet high and step them right down the slope. That was time-consuming, but it produced a really nice appearance.” Throughout the project, Miller was able to count on CertainTeed.
"We had a tight deadline to meet, so I asked our CertainTeed rep about getting the product expedited to me, and we had it in a couple of days,” Miller said. “Whenever I had any problems on the project, CertainTeed was always there for me.”
“The project turned out terrific,” said Robin Rhodes, vice president of the Worcester Country Club Board of Governors and chairman of the board’s Facilities Committee. “We were very pleased with Miller Fence’s work. They were responsive to our needs and kept us on-schedule and on-budget.”
“The pool and recreation complex has been overwhelmingly well received by the members,” Rhodes added. “And, it’s helping our membership grow at a time when it’s hard for country clubs to keep membership levels up.”
