Project: Tiny House
Location: Providence, Rhode Island
“Lil’ Lodge,” Tracey Powell’s 150-square-foot home on wheels, is a thoughtfully designed structure offering all the amenities and comforts of a full-size home. “It’s a high-tech, high-end tiny home, but it’s unique in that it’s also high-performance,” says Powell, an architectural consultant who designed and built the home for herself.
Among Powell’s top priorities in designing the home were safety, sustainability, durability and energy efficiency. “The challenge was finding products that would work within the confines of the space while meeting the need for outstanding performance,” Powell says. Powell turned to CertainTeed for a variety of product solutions.
With the home’s tight building envelope, indoor air quality is critical. “AirRenew Extreme Abuse helps keep the air clean while offering the durability needed in a small space where I might be bumping into walls,” notes Powell. Because the home is on wheels, Powell also wanted a drywall product that could withstand vibration and bumps along the road without cracking or settling.
For the exterior sheathing, Powell chose CertainTeed’s GlasRoc for its long-term protection and safety features. “GlasRoc enabled me to meet fire-safety standards for the entire exterior envelope, which is covered in continuous insulation,” says Powell. “It’s also lightweight, which is a key consideration in building a mobile structure with a 14,000 lb. weight limit.”
