The NAHB Green product certification program is a third-party review that you can share with homeowners who are interested in "green" building products. The Green Approved third-party endorsement provides evidence that building products meet specific green criteria and can automatically contribute to points that align with the NAHB's National Green Building Standard™. Through the program, points are awarded based on a variety of factors that contribute to the sustainability of a project, including recycled content, no finishing on site, ISO 14001 plant certification, and the use of termite-resistant materials. The program precertifies products, saving contractors and manufacturers time researching products to obtain certification under NAHB's National Green Building Standard. CertainTeed Siding Products Group has been involved with the development of this program from its beginning.
Currently, Cedar Impressions® Polymer Siding, all Vinyl Siding and Trim, Restoration Millwork® Cellular PVC Trim, and Panorama® Composite Railing have earned Green Approved certification. CertainTeed is the only manufacturer to have attained NAHB certification on their vinyl siding. For copies of the certificates, visit our Building Responsibly website.
CertainTeed is an active member of the U.S. Green Building Council and the NAHB. Both organizations have developed sustainability programs to continually improve their processes to reduce energy and water consumption, carbon emissions, and landfill waste. When homeowners choose CertainTeed siding, trim, and railing, they can be confident that the green choices they make today will extend positively into the future.
Cedar Impressions® and MainStreet™ bring new life to North Carolina apartment complex.
The exterior of the Walden at Greenfields apartment buildings in Chapel Hill, NC, seriously needed a facelift. The original Masonite siding had faded badly, and the 23-year-old complex was showing its age. Intent on improving the curb appeal of the complex and repairing some water damage from rotting OSB sheathing, owners King Properties Inc., of Richmond, VA, hired Coast to Coast Commercial Enterprises Inc., also of Richmond, to do a complete exterior renovation. The project included new roofing, doors, windows, chimneys, trim, and siding, with particular attention to the siding.
"A colorful, traditional appearance was of utmost importance to the customer, as was having a low-maintenance material," says Larry Tolleson, co-owner of Coast to Coast Commercial Enterprises. "We've used a lot of the CertainTeed vinyl siding products over the years, and Cedar Impressions® and MainStreet™ were perfect for this project." With guidance from Coast to Coast Commercial Enterprises, King Properties chose 2,000 squares of CertainTeed MainStreet™ Single 6-1/2" Beaded vinyl siding in Cypress and 500 squares of CertainTeed Cedar Impressions® Double 7" Straight-Edge Rough-Split Shakes in Buckskin. The Richmond branch of Allied Building Products supplied the siding.
Because the original Masonite siding had allowed water infiltration over the years, the crew had to first replace the rotted sheathing and apply a housewrap. They, then installed MainStreet siding on the buildings. To provide an attractive contrast, Cedar Impressions was installed on the gables. CertainTeed vinyl soffit and 3-1/2" vinyl window lineals completed the look.
Begun in March 2008, the entire renovation was completed in May 2009 and has received excellent reviews. Both the contractor and property owner were impressed with the new siding.
"It looks beautiful," Tolleson says. "You don't think of vinyl or polymer when you look at this siding — you think of real wood."
"I'm very pleased," says Emily Carter, Walden at Greenfields' property manager for King Properties. "The colors are absolutely gorgeous and complement each other very well. After this renovation, we've heard from people who think Walden at Greenfields is brand new."
EverNew LT deck in Sequoia color.
Consisting of a solid cellular PVC core, EverNew LT cellular PVC decking emulates the look and feel of wood, with all the advantages of a wood alternative. It never needs painting or staining, will not splinter, warp or rot, and is highly resistant to wood-boring insects. Adding to the product's appeal is its patent-pending, fusion-bonded Lumenite™ surface technology, which ensures lasting beauty by creating a shield of protection from mold, stains, and fading. The Lumenite surface is also solar-reflecting, making it cool to the touch, even on the hottest of days. The new decking provides exceptional advantages over competitive decking, including a 10-year warranty against staining and fading—an exclusive in the industry.
EverNew LT PVC decking is offered in four bold, rich colors: Saddle, Greystone, Dune, and Sequoia. Compared to traditional deck materials, it requires very little maintenance and is easy to clean. The only maintenance involved is an occasional washing with a standard garden hose to remove dirt and spills—a much simpler process than the periodic painting or staining required for wood decking. The product also carries a Class 1(A) fire rating.
Like other EverNew decking products, the new LT decking has a smooth, hidden fastener surface and is easily installed with traditional face fastening techniques, through the use of EverNew's exclusive DeckPilot system. We've recently revised out instructions for installing Cedar Impressions® Bay Window Cornerposts. In the revised instructions, we recommend that you install both wall sides at the corner at the same time. This will allow you to make small corrections to the bay window cornerpost installation as you move up the wall. Also, be sure to run Shingle Starter to both corners. When you install the Cedar Impressions panels, leave a 2-1/2" gap on each side of the corner; then hook the cornerposts over the siding, making sure they are locked into the starter strip. Nail through the top two holes of the cornerpost and continue installing the cornerpost as you move up the wall. When you reach the top panel, cut the cornerpost to length and nail it with a color-matched finish nail.
If you install the cornerposts before the siding, you will have to cut the Cedar Impressions panel to fit. To do this, measure from the edge of the last installed panel to the edge of the cornerpost. Add 1-1/4" to this dimension, and cut the panel to length. Then angle the panel under the cornerpost and slide it to the left until the side tabs clear. Slide the panel to the right until the correct temperature marks on the panel are lined up, and fasten the panel to the wall. Click here for complete instructions and diagrams.
2008 U.S. Census Bureau data indicate that vinyl siding continues to be the most popular choice in exterior cladding for new single family homes. Vinyl siding holds a 32% share of the market, followed by brick at 25%; stucco at 25%; fiber cement, 12%; and wood, 6%.
The July 2009 issue of the Vinyl Siding Institute's (VSI) Sidelines focuses on highlights of the census data. To read the article, visit Sidelines.
The Jungle Princess riverboat is sporting a fresh, new look with CertainTeed vinyl siding and railing.
The Jungle Princess wasn't looking very royal. With peeling paint and sagging railings, the 150-passenger tour boat had clearly seen better times. But it continued to offer passengers sightseeing cruises along the Waccamaw River and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, and its owners, The Great American Riverboat Company, felt an exterior makeover was in order. To that end, the boat's tropical, painted motif was replaced with low-maintenance vinyl siding.
Myrtle Beach-based G-Wiz Construction, Inc., installed CertainTeed Board & Batten Single 8" vertical siding and EverNew® vinyl railing. Board & Batten recreates a siding favored by early settlers to protect and beautify homes, outbuildings, and, in this case, riverboats. On the Jungle Princess, alternating wide and narrow vertical panels combined in a simple, yet beautiful design well suited to the distinctive North Carolina shoreline.
Departing from the north end of Myrtle Beach, the Jungle Princess cruises the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway as passengers view beautiful homes and natural areas. In addition to sightseeing, passengers can enjoy pirate ghost stories as well as sunset and dinner cruises.
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's (NYSERDA) High Performance Residential Development Challenge is intended to educate home builders on the construction of cost-effective, high-energy performance homes. A side-by-side field test in 2008-2009 comparing insulated vinyl siding with James Hardie fiber cement siding demonstrated that insulated vinyl siding outperforms exterior cladding alternatives on environmental measures, including performance.
In addition to a life cycle analysis, the NYSERDA-supported study evaluated insulated siding in terms of "possible contribution to points achieved within nationally recognized green building standards and guidelines, energy conservation potential as projected by building energy simulation and software, and thermal performance as demonstrated by on-site thermal imaging."
