CertainTeed’s Roofing Plant in Oxford, N.C., Achieves OHSAS 18001 Certification, Solidifies Commitment to Employee Health & Safety

(Oxford, N.C.) – Furthering its commitment to workplace health and safety, CertainTeed Corporation’s roofing plant in Oxford, N.C., recently received OHSAS 18001 certification. The certification underscores CertainTeed’s ongoing efforts to provide a safe, healthy and productive workplace for every employee.

OHSAS 18001 is an internationally recognized assessment specification for occupational health and safety management systems. It was developed by a selection of leading trade organizations, international standards and certification organizations to address a gap where no third-party certifiable international standard exists.

“For more than a year, a team of our employees conducted risk assessments for all jobs in all departments and established a structured system for managing workplace safety,” said Gail Birdsong, human resources manager at the Oxford plant. “The OHSAS 18001 certification ensures everyone from management to line employees are working from the same playbook to create the safest, most productive workplace possible.”

To achieve OHSAS 18001 certification, CertainTeed’s Oxford plant developed a formalized system for addressing a number of occupational health and safety measures including hazard identification, risk assessment and control, employee training and awareness, operational control, emergency preparedness, and performance monitoring and improvement. The management system established as part of the OHSAS 18001 certification will be integrated into the plant’s ISO 9001 quality management and ISO 14001 environmental management practices, creating a solid operating foundation for the plant.

“We are very proud of what the team at Oxford has accomplished,” said Tom Smith, president of CertainTeed Roofing. “This certification is a testament to the savvy and professional workforce at the Oxford plant and their ongoing drive to improve plant operations.”

The Oxford plant employs more than 300 professionals and manufactures CertainTeed’s complete line of laminated asphalt roofing shingles.
