Cummins Inc., Uses CertainTeed® CrimpWrap™ Crimped Pipe and Tank Wrap in Mechanical-Electrical Facility Upgrade to Maximize Energy Efficiency
(Valley Forge, Pa.) – Cummins Inc., a leading global engine manufacturer, commissioned a complete mechanical and electrical system overhaul last year for its manufacturing facility in Columbus, Ind., designed for top energy efficiency.
Designed by full-service architectural and engineering firm SSOE, Inc., the facility upgrade was in response to Cummins updating its manufacturing facility to accommodate the addition of a new engine line. It included a new electrical distribution system; chiller system; new piping for water, sewer and natural gas; and a new HVAC system. When SSOE came to the HVAC portion of the design, it specified a choice of two insulation products for the system’s large spiral ductwork to ensure energy efficiency and minimal loss of conditioned air. One of the options was CertainTeed® CrimpWrap™ Crimped Pipe and Tank Wrap, a product that SSOE had used previously.
“We had used CrimpWrap for insulation in some other automotive facilities and experienced positive results,” says Marcus Droll, Mechanical Engineer for SSOE. “The product went up well and installed easily.”
JR Insulation, Inc., of Morgantown, Ind., the project’s mechanical insulation contractor, preferred CrimpWrap and made the final choice to use it on the project. Between November 2007 and June 2008, the contractor installed 90,000 square feet of CrimpWrap over the ductwork — ranging in diameter from 24 to 48 inches — and over pipes and tanks. The CrimpWrap was supplied by Indianapolis insulation distributor General Insulation Company.
“CrimpWrap Crimped Pipe and Tank Wrap is ideal for insulating vessels, large diameter pipes and HVAC ductwork, with service temperatures from 35°F to 850°F,” says Renee Chesler, Vice President and General Manager for CertainTeed’s HVAC Insulation business. “It helps control heat loss or gain and provides hot surface personnel protection during system operation.”
The product’s unique, variably oriented fibers provide the thermal and compressible properties found in rigid fiberglass board products, while remaining flexible enough to wrap vessels. CrimpWrap can be used as a cost-effective substitute for pre-formed pipe insulation on large-diameter pipes. Also, it eliminates the potential for strip delamination common in traditional tank wrap during fabrication and installation. The JR Insulation crew found the product easy to handle and liked the smooth, white finish of its All Service Jacket (ASJ) facing.
“I like the way the CrimpWrap lays,” says Brian Kennett, Project Manager for JR Insulation. “Plus, it’s more dense and sturdy than other duct wraps we’ve used, and it won’t bend or suck in like other wraps. I can tell that it’s going to hold up for many years to come.”
