Cost and familiarity. Mineral fiber panels became a staple of North American design when the suspended ceiling replaced the plaster ceiling in 1950s. Mineral fiber panels perform two acoustic functions at a relatively low cost – they do an OK job at absorbing noise and also at blocking noise. In the past, building designers had no reason to look elsewhere for ceiling solutions. Recently there has been a rise in the interest of improved acoustic design for all spaces. The result has been a renewed examination of higher performing fiberglass ceilings as better ceiling solutions.
