How can vinyl Siding be sustainable/ GREEN?
- Vinyl Is RECYCLABLE & made with recycle content what other cladding material can be recycled? CertainTeed Vinyl contains up to 80% post consumer and industrial recycle content with nearly ZERO waste created during manufacturing
- No Maintenance: No paint or caulk required; meets “Aging In Place” guidelines
- Life Cycle Analysis (LCA): BEES LCA tool show vinyl to have less carbon dioxide emissions through product life than any cladding choice except cedar.
- Vinyl Meets LEED & NAHB GREEN Building Guideline

What is GREEN Building?Green is the use of: - Products
- Materials
- Design Considerations, and
- Construction Methodologies...
That make a home: - Healthier
- Lower Maintenance
- Lower Operating Costs
- And, More Energy Efficient

What is LEED?
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.
LEED for Homes is a voluntary rating system that promotes the design and construction of high performance "green" homes. A green home uses less energy, water, and natural resources; creates less waste; and is healthier and more comfortable for the occupants. |
What is Sustainability?
Sustainability provides opportunities to create value and improve quality of life for the company, people and the community. Strong environmental and social performance contribute to sustained profitable growth.

What is a Carbon Footprint?
- A carbon footprint is the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases emitted over the full life cycle of a product or service.
- Almost every activity in our society is responsible for the production of CO2 and other greenhouse gases which contribute to global warming.
- Carbon footprinting is used to benchmark the level of CO2 generated by a process or in the production of a product.
|
What is a lifecycle analysis?
A life cycle analysis is a study of the environmental impact of a given product or service throughout its lifespan.
|
What is BEES?
- The BEES (Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability) tool is a software program developed by the U.S. federal government to aid in selecting environmentally friendly and cost-effective building products.
- BEES uses data from Life Cycle Analyses of many building products to provide comparisons between products, allowing the user to choose the best product according to their preferences.
- BEES provides information on product performance in a variety of categories, including Global Warming, Human Health, Fossil Fuel Depletion, Ecological Toxicity, Indoor Air Quality, and others.
|
What is Cradle to Cradle?
- Utilizing product scrap or, at end of life, as a feedstock material to produce a new recycled content similar product.
- Opposite of "Cradle to Grave".
- The program for collection and recycling of post-consumer siding at manufactured housing plants has the potential for significant marketing opportunities and competitive advantage for CertainTeed.

There are many choices for exterior cladding materials, but what makes a cladding green?
Low embodied energy, high recycled content, no additional finishing, durability, low maintenance, cost effectiveness, and the ability to recyclable at end of life are some of the key green attributes. Some of CertainTeed polymer siding, vinyl siding and trim products meet these (or some of these) green attributes.
|
Why are CertainTeed’s Polymer Siding, Vinyl Siding, and Trim products the best environmental product choice?
- Recyclable at end of life and some products contain up to 80% recycled content
- No Maintenance
- No additional on site finish required (paint or caulk)
- Insulated siding products improve building energy efficiency
- Life Cycle Analysis tools such as BEES show vinyl siding to be one of the best cladding choices from an environmental stand-point
- Meets LEED and NAHB Green Building Guidelines.
|
How do CertainTeed’s Polymer Siding, Vinyl Siding, and Trim products meet LEED Guidelines?
- Environmentally Preferred Products/ Recycle Content
- Energy Star
- Local Materials
|
How do CertainTeed’s Polymer Siding, Vinyl Siding, and Trim products meet NAHB Green Building Guidelines?
- No Finishing On Site (no paint or caulk)
- Energy Efficiency
- Termite Resistant
- Recycle Content
- Local Materials
- Environmentally preferable product per BEES LCA tool (compared to brick, stucco, other cladding).

What's the recycle content of CedarBoards™ Double 6"?
CedarBoards™ Double 6 contains 60% recycle content. This information is audited quarterly by an independent third party. This high recycle content helps in qualifying for LEED H, LEED NC, and NAHB green building credits for environmentally proffered products. CedarBoards D6" is one of only a few cladding options that provides this benefit (not fiber cement and no other vinyl siding product).

My county or state adopted a newer version of IECC 2006; what does it mean to me?
The International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) provides the minimum energy efficiency provisions for residential & commercial buildings. It contains building envelope requirements for thermal performance (R-value) by climate zones. See below for some examples.
By providing additional R-value, CedarBoards can help you meet the requirement when residing your house or building a new one.

* 13 for the entire wall and 5 for the sheathing.

What are phthalates and heavy metal, and does vinyl siding contains some?
Phthalate are used in a large variety of products ranging from shower curtains to perfumes or agricultural additives, making people commonly exposed to phthalates. They are linked to change in hormone levels and birth defects and are being phased out of many products in the US and in Europe. More details can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phthalate
Heavy metals as defined in medical usage include all toxic metals; heavy metal poisoning can include excessive amounts of iron, manganese, aluminum or beryllium. Toxic metals sometimes imitate the action of an essential element in the body, interfering with the metabolic process to cause illness. More details can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxic_metal
CertainTeed vinyl does not contain phthalates or heavy metals. Many in the green building community are focused on the elimination of these components. . While many other manufacturers do use them, CertainTeed has not used them. |
What's the $ value of insulated siding projects?
According to Hanley Wood, insulated siding is one of the top upscale projects in terms of recouped cost. Even more important insulated vinyl siding projects are one of the few projects that show signs of increasing in value (compared to 2007)… this is driven by energy efficiency/cost savings and green trends.
