CertainTeed Ceilings:

Sustainable. Transparent.

CertainTeed Ceilings is the first manufacturer in the ceiling products industry to issue Environmental Product Declarations – comprehensive third-party life cycle assessments that tell their whole green story. Our EPDs cover 19 ceiling product families, and now they are certified by both UL environment and The Green Standard. Click below to view/download.

What is an Environmental Product Declaration?

An Environmental Product Declaration, or EPD, is a rigorous third part examination of a product or product family's environmental impact. Evaluations are based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) that is performed using established Product Category Rules (PCRs).

What's in an EPD?
  • Detailed breakdown of material content
  • Production process and life cycle stage diagrams
  • Health and safety information of producing and using the products
  • Diagram of relative primary energy usage by life cycle stage
  • Information on CertainTeed's ceiling panel takeback/recycling program
Resource Extraction Manufacturing On-site Construction
Life Cycle of Building Products
Recycling/Reuse/Disposal Demolition Occupancy/Maintenance

Why are EPDs Important?

CertainTeed Ceilings respect for the environment is reflected in our ongoing emphasis on sustainable building products and systems. Open sharing of the data we gather on these effects - as embodied in Environmental Product Declarations - is central to the process, and sets CertainTeed Ceilings apart.

Environmental Product Declarations are important because they fill the gap for really critically valuable information on the performance of individual products, adding to the performance of the whole building system. Deborah Dunning Founder, The Green Standard CEO, Sphere E, LLC

Our Product Families Covered by EPDs

Architects and specifiers looking for sustainable ceiling systems that will contribute points under LEED® and other green building standards must be able to rely on the accuracy of manufacturer's environmental impact data.

Our Commitment to the Environment

CertainTeed Ceiling's commitment to enhance our green profile extends throughout our business. We've focused our efforts in several areas including:

Industrial Ecology

When waste from one industrial process become the raw material of another, businesses operate with the efficiency and grace of a natural system. Our L'Anse, Michigan manufacturing facility receives 100% renewable electricity from the nearby Warden Electric biomass power plant, which burns waste wood to generate power. Excess steam from the utility is also channeled to our factory, reducing overall natural gas consumption by 25% and earning third-party verification of baron footprint reduction from the Green Circle Certification System.

Recycled Content

Our Ecophon® product line features 70% post-consumer recycled content - the highest such percentage of any ceiling panel available in North America. In fact, many CertainTeed ceiling panels have at least 50% recycled content. Our mineral fiber panels incorporate steel mill slag waste and post-consumer waste, such as newspaper. And more than 90% of manufacturing waste (pre-consumer) is recycled back into the production process.

Recycling Program

CertainTeed Ceilings initiated a program to reclaim and recycle old ceiling panels, effectively closing the loop on a product's life cycle. It not only produces cost savings through elimination of landfill disposal fees, but also allows property owners and contractor participants to gain valuable LEED points under the construction waste management credit.
